Joe McCabe returns the mountains, and the solitary life he prefers. It is alone by a campfire at night, or riding along the ridges by day, that he can let the pain from his past fully die. But when a figure he hasn't seen in years steps back into his life, bringing a whole new load of trouble, will it be more than he can handle?

As a western author myself, I'm really picky about historical realism and character development or arc. Again, one of my favorite authors of any genre doesn't disappoint. Brad Dennison never fails to suck you into the story. I always feel like I've been dallied off hard and fast and am always sorry to come to the end of the story. Brad makes the eldest McCabe, Joe, the lead in Wandering Man, but make no mistake, he's still a McCabe. Keep 'em coming, Brad, you are a master wordsmith and an inspiration to all western writers.

Wandering Man The McCabes Brad Dennison 9781521388150 Books Reviews

I have loved Brad Dennison's McCabe Series from the first book with each only getting better. Mr. Dennison has a clean, concise way of putting a western story together. This story is about the quiet one, Joe. It finally gives the Joe character a finishing touch of the brush. You will enjoy how this one turns out; but please, for your own western reading enjoyment, read all of the McCabe Series starting with Dusty.
Wow! What a great read. I have really enjoyed this book as with all the McCabe's books they really hold your attention. You just have to turn the page to see what is gonna happen next. I do hope to see more on Joe in the future. I would love to see them get their name cleared. I look forward to more books on the McCabe family in the future.
I have enjoyed the majority of the McCabe novels, however this one was very predictable and simplistic.

From the beginning when the author starts mentioning Joe's long lost love Kate you knew where it was heading.

There are repeated references to characters from other novels who some only briefly appear in this novel. Also in this book deputies of two towns are handed over the rains and in both instances he explains how on a "Tuesday" night nothing much happens. It seemed like the author copied and pasted paragraphs from this book as well as others for character descriptions.

The English lady Kate using "at'all" multiple times seemed out of place, her mountain man Joe using it seemed more appropriate.

This novel did not seem thought out as the first few of the series.

Considering the kindle version is less than a dollar I should not expect literature or good editing.

Two stars sounds reasonable for this outing as only the best of the other McCabe novels are subjectively a 3 star.
This series is the best, I have read them all. The McCabe family series is one everybody can relate to that has grown up in a family that is close and has traced their history. What a great author. Want to read all he writes.
I went about this all wrong! First I read "McCabe County" and it was a very, very good book but there were many references to past McCabes and it left me wondering. Then I found the McCabe series of nine books. I bought all nine and set about reading them. I thought they were excellent and as I was reading I came across the characters that were in the "McCabe County" book and couldn't remember what was said about them. So...I read "McCabe County" again. Now "I know all" and am a very happy person! Buy them, read them in the correct order and enjoy!! They are excellent!
As with all the McCabe books, I enjoy this one, especially learning more about Joe McCabe, the oldest and most mysterious brother. Seems to me there might even be a sequel to his story, as the ending leaves that option open. The author always shows his own philosophy of what is right, or wrong and how sometimes the "laws" may be the law, but they are NOT always moral or just. I agree completely with that philosophy.
This book follows Joe McCabe, the wanderer back into the mountains. Then, coincidentally, he finds one of his first two loves in jail waiting to be hanged for killing the man she married instead of Joe. If you have read many of this series, you know they almost all depend on way to much coincidence....Dusty coming across the dad he never new, Joe and Johnny running in to each other crossing the plains from opposite directions...The spinster sister-in-law finding her only love whom she hadn't seen in 30 years and the McCabes breaking him out of a Mexican prison and taking him to Canada. Other than that, and once you get past the coincidence, the stories are well told. Dynamic characters are brought to life, and the book is fun to read. I barely made it past the first two or three novels, because of the horrible editing. It appears Dennison is proofing his writing and maybe has an editor that knows the job. If you like the McCabes, you may like this book the best and it has the feel of a professional author who is becoming a master of his craft. I can easily recommend Wandering Man. Good read.
